Thanks for your comment. I would like to clarify a few of my points here.
First of all, the main purpose of card sorting is not “using the users to design their own interface” but to understand what really matters to our users and the way of structuring the information. As I mentioned in my article, the UX designer is a person who translates user feedbacks to the design, not generates a user experience on their own. That’s why I need to listen to users in order to solve their problems.
Secondly, I do agree with you that sometimes the user feedback is not as “innovative” because it is impacted by what they have already seen. However, I believe that the user feedback is based on their real needs which is truly valuable to us to craft a good solution.
Lastly, the results of my card sorting were totally various. Each user was unique and they provided me different ways of organizing the content. As a designer, my goal is to understand the reasons behind, analyze loads of feedbacks and translate them to one solution that makes sense to the users.
